At Whiteface, bigger vertical means bigger adventure. With 94 trails stretching over 25 miles and encompassing three peaks and 300 acres, skiers and riders are drawn here for many reasons – including the off-hill activities, lodging and restaurants in Lake Placid and the surrounding area. Lookout Mountain and the Wilmington Trail are open so check out the endless views and nice snow. Midwinter conditions are great right now so you should visit Whiteface for a ski day or longer.
There’s still plenty of ticket availability for Presidents week so book soon to guarantee tickets and save up to 45% off. If you’d like to become a skier or rider, or just brush up on your technique and skills with a professional, lessons are fun for all ability levels. They have programs for kids, adults and teens, including private lessons. Whiteface has started the Cloudspin Music Series, presented by Saratoga Eagle, with live music and specials in the Cloudspin Bar & Grill every Saturday. Gore Mountain has tons of sweet terrain to explore with all mountain areas open. With 14 lifts and 109 trails, explore NY’s biggest mountain – skiers and riders love the terrain diversity that nine sides of four peaks deliver. The grand opening of Gore’s new Backwoods intermediate trail on Burnt Ridge Mountain on Jan. 26 was a season highlight. The trail has a beautiful northeast view, then tons of great turns to follow the land, and ends above the Roaring Brook Bridge, making a more direct access to the North Creek Ski Bowl.
For Presidents week, purchase your tickets online in advance to lock in your days of skiing and riding, and get the best prices. The snow sports school has lessons for all levels, instructor/patrol in training, and adult midweek programs. Gore has started their ‘Rippin and Sippin’ apres-ski fun, presented by Saratoga Eagle, every with live music and specials every Saturday. Citizens XC Ski and Snowshoe Races on Wednesdays continue at the Ski Bowl through March 1. At West Mountain, they have a family-friendly atmosphere, the snowmaking, and 100% lighted trails to make day and night skiing and riding equally enjoyable. They have 35 trails and a large tubing park. They have plenty of ticket specials, tubing tickets, and lesson programs for great winter experiences. Upcoming events include their popular Fire on the Mountain on Feb. 18 with skiing and tubing until 9pm, a torchlight parade and fireworks at 9pm, food and drink specials, bonfire and live music. Willard Mountain is a place where everyone can learn to ski or snowboard in a relaxed family environment, or simply enjoy cruising down the mountain. Willard offers programs and lessons, tubing, night skiing and more. On Feb. 18, come see the Bolesky Bump Off on the Colonel trail, the only freestyle event held under the lights in the Northeast. At Oak Mountain, it’s fun for the whole family with affordable skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and miles of free snowshoeing trails. Oak has terrain to suit everyone’s needs with 22 trails, four lifts, an outstanding ski and snowboard school, and breathtaking view from the top. The Acorn Pub & Eatery has Adirondack cuisine and lots of après music to end the day. For Presidents week, there are still tickets available but they do anticipate selling out so plan ahead and don’t miss out. McCauley Mountain, nestled in the central Adirondacks, is big mountain family fun with a small mountain attitude, with short lift lines, and low prices. From long cruisers to bumps and glades, to black diamond challenges, they have 21 slopes and trails up to a mile long, and four lifts. At Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, just over the border in Hancock, Mass., offers everything you need close to home with 45 trails covering 167 acres. At Jiminy, 55% of their ski area is open at night daily, so you can ski or ride down the mountain after watching the sunset from the summit. They’ve also created top notch learning programs, weekly programs and kids’ camps. All trails funnel back to the base area so it’s family-friendly for their kids to ski or ride. Things to do include their Peak Music Series; STRIDE 100K Vertical Challenge on Feb. 27; Wounded Warrior Snowfest on March 5; and STRIDE’s Great Race (adaptive) and Spring Fling with cardboard box derby, fun races for the kiddos, and the annual pond skimming contest on March 18. Catamount Mountain Resort straddles the NY/MA border, with varied terrain for skiers and riders of all levels. They offer eight lifts, 44 trails, snowmaking, night skiing and snow tubing. Their new Glade Triple chair will finally begin running on Presidents weekend! Upcoming events include Catamount’s free Neon Lights Laser Show set to music in a festive party atmosphere with night skiing on Feb. 18, and their first-ever Cardboard Classic Sled Race is sure to be a blast for all ages with prizes on March 11.
