PADDLING

Although it takes a little effort to get there, Lake Lila is, without a doubt, one of the Adirondack Park’s premier paddling destinations. All of the lake’s shoreline is state land and it is now part of the William C. Whitney Wilderness, which also includes Little Tupper Lake, where motors are not allowed. The nearest paved road is a distant few miles away and the 1,400-acre lake offers 23 primitive tent sites and one lean-to for those staying overnight. READ MORE

HIKING

Starbuck Mountain is part of a six-pack of mountains crammed into the geographically-busy region between NY Route 28 and the Hudson River. Seriously, just look at a topographic map and you’ll see the two rows of triple-summited ridges lined up perfectly with each other, the central axis skewed somewhat to the east of north. Starbuck accounts for two of the six, but the others are Harris Rift, Fox, Middle, and Black. READ MORE

NON-MEDICATED LIFE

Over the past two years, the majority of the attention of this column has been directed to lifestyle and public health strategies to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. With the virus hopefully entering an endemic stage, it is time to turn our attention back to a killer no less daunting than SARS-CoV-2 – I am speaking of cardiovascular disease. In the last two years, Covid-19 has killed one-million Americans. In that same period cardiovascular disease – primarily heart attacks and strokes – have killed more than 1.6-million Americans. It is, indeed, time to refocus on this killer and the lifestyle strategies that combat it, which can in some studies reduce cardiovascular death and non-fatal heart attack by 70%. READ MORE

ATHLETE PROFILE

Sam Roecker can add a Guinness record to her long list of running accomplishments. On April 18, Sam ran the 126th Boston Marathon in scrubs in 2:48:02 while raising awareness and money for nurses’ mental health to become the fastest person to run a marathon in scrubs, beating the previous record of 3:08:22.
