HIKING, PADDLING & CAMPING
By Bill Ingersoll
This under-appreciated hike along the Raquette River passes no fewer than five lean-tos, including one just 0.2-mile from the trailhead and another unassuming shelter within spitting distance of a ranger station. If you are dead-set on camping in a lean-to on your next adventure, few hiking routes are this well endowed with options. READ MORE

And he’s right. Ian’s upbringing near Saratoga Springs included some kids team sports including Little League baseball and youth soccer. But by his senior year in high school his outdoor upbringing and pursuits had turned him on to mountain biking, skiing, and the outdoors. READ MORE

Changes in Latitude and Attitude – Falkland Islands and Antarctica
By Dave Kraus
As a long-time newspaper photojournalist, I’ve had to photograph and deal with all kinds of people in all kinds of places. So, when I semi-retired three years ago I began exploring other areas of photography and made it a personal goal to go on this bucket list trip to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic. But I never thought it would actually happen until I found this tour from Muench Photo Workshops that would let me explore this incredible part of the world with fellow photographers under conditions designed just for shooters. While things ended up not going exactly as planned, the results exceeded all my expectations. READ MORE

A Tribute to Mountaineer Nola Royce
By Sonja Stark
“If you’re serious about peak-bagging, you need to have the right gear,” she said, lending me one of her hiking poles. My kneecaps writhed in pain as we descended the steep, uneven terrain of the Adirondacks. It relieved the pressure but it was still torture. This wouldn’t be the first time Nola’s momentum on the mountains put mine to shame. READ MORE

HEALTH & FITNESS
By Dr. Tim Maggs
“Oh, everyone doesn’t need orthotics.” This was the response I got from a top chiropractic researcher after reading an article authored by me and Dr. Terry Yochum in 2011, “100% of My Patients Get Orthotics. What About Yours?”
In 2011, this article was the by-product of Dr. Yochum, a leading chiropractic radiologist, and me lecturing together many times, and him hearing my reasoning, case studies and experience with orthotics and patients. At breakfast one morning, he suggested we write the article. Evidently, it made sense to him. READ MORE

EARTH DAY & CLIMATE CHANGE
From the Pond to the Streets – This Earth Day, it’s time to pick up a shovel and get to work
By Robin Wall Kimmerer
Editor’s note: In 2020, on the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day, Sierra: The magazine of the Sierra Club asked bestselling author and scientist Robin Wall Kimmerer to share some thoughts about how to revitalize the unofficial environmental holiday. Her thoughts are just as wise today as they were four years ago, and so Adirondack Sports is republishing her Sierra essay to mark Earth Day 2024. READ MORE
