BIKING
By Dave Kraus
Remember the days (if you’re old enough) when you used to use a paper calendar or planner? Or, if you’re our publisher/editor, you still do! It seemed like the pages turned or the leaves flew off that little desktop calendar twice as fast when summer arrived. Before you knew it, the real-life leaves were flying off the trees and another summer of cycling had disappeared. READ MORE

PADDLING & HIKING
By Rich Macha
In most years, you can find peak fall foliage in the higher elevations of the Adirondack Park around the end of September and in early October. By Indigenous Peoples’/Columbus Day weekend, the bright red and orange leaves of the red and sugar maple trees will likely have dropped to the ground, but the yellows of the birches and the golds of the beeches may still be evident. Thanks to climate change, in recent years the best colors have been persisting through to the holiday which falls on October 14 this year – perhaps a little bit late for peak in higher elevations in the Adirondacks. After that date, the colors should pop in the lowlands and the Hudson River Valley. READ MORE

RUNNING
By Laura Clark
Growing up in Queens, I have fond childhood memories of dragging my feet in the gutters for the sheer pleasure of kicking up piles of leaves. Now I do the same on upstate trails, although I must admit my more grown-up pleasure is to study the mosaic of colorful leaves at my feet and vow (yet again) to learn how to quilt. This childlike joy translates to the running community where it seems as if every weekend offers at least six running options. Rather than dashing like a mad hatter from one to the other, use these listings to select your races thoughtfully according to your personal game plan. Seeking to up your mileage or turn in a decent 5K in crisp, clear weather? Want to try a new, pre-marked trail in the woods? Want to do all of this and support meaningful charities? Whatever. Just make sure to include a few fun low-key events where you can join with friends and family. READ MORE

ATHLETE PROFILE
Corinne Boyle – Creating Something Beautiful
By Kristen Hislop
To graduate from Hamilton College, you had to pass a swimming test. You also had to give a speech or take a public speaking class. I tested out of the swim test (since I was on the team) but had to take public speaking and it was traumatizing. Those are probably two of the scariest challenges people face! Some mothers put their kids in swim lessons and give them the basics. Others like to prep their kids for the bigger challenges ahead, so they tell their kids they only have to swim until they can beat them in 100 meters (me) or 1650 meters (Cynthia). Corinne Boyle’s mom Cynthia swam in college and was preparing Corinne for greatness. The swimming team started in first grade for Corinne and by the time she was 13 she didn’t want to quit! Her mom had actually said swim until you are 13 or beat my time of 18:38 in the 1650. As a sprinter she was not interested in going long, but by 13 had formed some fast friendships and a love for the sport. READ MORE

NON-MEDICATED LIFE
By Paul E. Lemanski, MD, MS, FACP
In the first 116 installments of the Non-Medicated Life, a healthy diet and lifestyle have been shown to accomplish naturally for the majority of individuals most of the benefits of medications in the prevention of the chronic medical conditions mentioned above. With respect to a healthy diet, much of the benefit for cardiovascular disease and cancer prevention has been attributed to the presence of the antioxidants in foods. This article will address the potential mechanisms of benefit, why antioxidant supplements do not appear to offer benefit, and those foods that contain the most potent antioxidants for preventing disease and maintaining health.
