RUNNING & WALKING
Turkey Trots - Fly Away Home with the Turkeys
By Laura Clark
Even though the 1996 feel-good, family movie, Fly Away Home, involves geese and not turkeys, and overlooking the slight detail that turkeys are homebodies and do not migrate, the keyword here is home. And reflect carefully on the phrase “fly away.” In many instances we would fly to a place, but around the holidays many of us feel compelled to point our wingtips toward our home of tradition, rather than our home of current residence. Wherever your Home for the Holidays might happen to be, and whoever your flock might happen to include, Thanksgiving is the time to tune up your navigation instruments, either for a cross-country ultra or for simply cruising around the block. NON-MEDICATED LIFE
Potential Benefits of Advanced Cholesterol Testing, Part One
By Paul E. Lemanski, MD, MS, FACP
In the first 111 installments of the Non-Medicated Life, a healthy diet and lifestyle has been shown to accomplish naturally for the majority of individuals most of the benefits of medications in the prevention of the chronic medical conditions mentioned above. In order to maximize the benefit of lifestyle changes it is best to first establish a baseline of laboratory tests of so called “surrogate markers” of risk. Markers such as fasting blood sugar, Hgb a1c, total cholesterol, HDL (the good cholesterol) and LDL (the bad cholesterol) and Triglycerides (blood fats) are routinely followed serially to determining increasing or decreasing risk. After a discussion with your primary care physician or cardiologist additional testing may be helpful. “Advanced” cholesterol testing such as High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (HS-CRP), Apolipoprotein B (Apo B), Trimethylamine-N Oxide (TMAO), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance LipoProfile (NMR LipoProfile) may offer additional identification of risk and when measured serially may help direct and refine lifestyle choices. In this two-part article, Part One will address the first two advanced tests, Part Two the remaining advanced tests. READ MORE

Buck 50 – An Epic Trail Race is Born
By Bill & Naomi Hoffman
The idea of traversing 32 miles through remote wilderness may seem like a foreign concept to 99% of the population. However, the growing sport of ultra trail running routinely has people doing that and more. Each trail race is a unique adventure, rooted in the idea of sharing an awe-inspiring place with like-minded runners. On October 21, the inaugural Buck 50K united volunteers, runners, forest rangers, and others along the shores of Lake George. The mountain route – from YMCA Camp Chingachgook in Kattskill Bay to Buck, Sleeping Beauty, Black, Erebus, Buck and back – proved to be an excellent challenge. READ MORE

By Kristen Hislop
We often hear the phrase ‘a life of service.’ That’s what first came to mind when thinking about a profile about Kathy Meany. As I gathered stories, I realized it was way more than service.
