Late Summer Paddling at DEC Campgrounds

The NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation operates 52 campgrounds in the Catskills and the Adirondacks (NYS Parks operates campgrounds in other parts of the state), many of which close in early September. However, a fair number of campgrounds do stay open through October 9 this year, and offer some quiet water paddling opportunities at or near the campground. READ MORE

Summer Training and Fall Races

Summer training in June, July and August yields the best results for the fall racing season. Who’s waiting for cool temps during swimsuit season? Runners with a fall goal race! While it’s tempting to kick back during the dog days, if you have a fall event, summer is the time to be focused, whether it’s a distance, time or destination. These September races are great goal races and/or opportunities to test out your training, endurance, speedwork, nutrition and everything else if you’re pursuing longer races. READ MORE

BICYCLING

Now in its third year, the Handlebarley Gravel Tour is on Sunday, Sept. 17 in North Hudson. It’s a mixed surface ride that has it all, the best of which is that 95% of the route is on rural eastern Adirondack backroads – and it starts and finishes at Paradox Brewery. As an update, the full weekend and Saturday only packages are sold out, but slots are still available for the main event on Sunday. READ MORE

Lewis Pugh – Hudson River Swim 2023

Many of Adirondack Sports readers recreate in the rivers and lakes in upstate New York. We have a fleeting thought about the quality of the water as we embark on the swim portion of a triathlon, pull out the paddleboard, wade in to fish or kayak some rapids. We are blessed with many clean freshwater lakes that feed the rivers that have carried us and supported our economies over the years. People have inhabited this area since the last ice age and for thousands of years tribes like the Lenape lived in harmony with the environment. READ MORE
