Albany Hudson Electric Trail – Ride, Walk, Run on It!
By Gregg Berninger
Where hydro-powered electric trains once carried millworkers, day trippers, amusement park goers, and Interurban travelers from near and far, now lies the Albany Hudson Electric Trail. The AHET runs 36 miles and is one of the final pieces of the aptly named Empire Trail connecting New York City, Buffalo, and Montreal. READ MORE

HIKING
By Rich Macha
The towns of Hadley and Lake Luzerne straddle the Hudson River in the southeastern Adirondacks. Here, the free-flowing Hudson is surrounded by small but rugged mountains as it drops over Rockwell Falls, then meets the Sacandaga River before being tamed by the dams downstream. Rockwell Falls can be viewed from the Bridge of Hope which connects the two communities. READ MORE

RUNNING & WALKING

Life as we knew it before March 2020 is slowly returning to normal. Vaccines have been available to nearly all age groups and the infection rate has plummeted to less than 2%. It’s all great news! The fall calendar is beginning to look like it used to. But, what about the summer racing calendar? READ MORE

PADDLING
Indian Lake – Miles of Shoreline Offer Lots to Explore
By Alan Mapes
“Indian Lake is a scene
You should make with your little one
Keep it in mind if you’re lookin to find
A place in the summer sun”
So go the lyrics of the Cowsills’ hit song from 1969 – the year I graduated from high school, but who’s counting? I paddle a fair amount in the Adirondacks, but somehow had not been on Indian Lake for many years. A trip there was long overdue. READ MORE

ATHLETE PROFILE
By Alex Kochon
A lifelong athlete who averages at least one marathon a year (not including hundreds of miles of hiking and trail running), Ed Gravelle knows a thing or two about the “survival shuffle.” In road marathons, it’s known as “the wall.” He hit it in his very first marathon when he was 20 years old during the Niagara Falls International Marathon from Buffalo to his hometown of Niagara Falls. “I was young and stupid,” Ed recalled with a laugh. “I ran the first 20 miles very, very, very fast, and I just hit the wall terribly and both legs gave out. I averaged six minutes a mile to 20 miles and then I ended up finishing at 3:09, so it took me an hour and nine minutes to do that last 10K.” READ MORE

NON-MEDICATED LIFE
Vaccine Diplomacy and End of Covid-19
By Paul E. Lemanski, MD, MS, FACP
In my first seven articles on Covid-19, lifestyle-based risk mitigation strategies – including masking, social distancing, hand washing, targeted quarantine, and, when necessary, lock downs – were recommended to keep the population well until a safe and effective vaccine was developed and “in the arms” of a majority of Americans. In this way, vaccinating the majority would result in so called “herd immunity” (see Non-Medicated Life, February 2021) and stop the transmission of the virus to the remaining minority who were not vaccinated.
